Manweller legislation to update management rules of Milwaukee Road corridor signed by governor
Gov. Jay Inslee has signed House Bill 2225, introduced by Rep. Matt Manweller, to update archaic statutes to management of the Milwaukee Road Corridor, an old railroad path turned into a trail.
“The Parks and Recreation Commission has been operating and managing this corridor differently than other rail trails in the state because this was the first trail of its kind,” said Manweller, R-Ellensburg. “This legislation lets the commission operate this rail trail like it does all the others and it also improves crop access for farmers in the region. Those who have agricultural lands along with road will now be able to access their fields from different sections of the corridor.”
Current law does not allow rail trail properties to be accessed by agricultural vehicles, nor were farmers allowed to negotiate access to their land from the trails. This will change under House Bill 2225.
Manweller’s bill will go into effect on June 12, 2014. It passed the House and Senate unanimously during the legislative session.
