Governor signs Rep. Manweller’s TV reception district bill

Today, the governor signed 13th District Rep. Matt Manweller’s TV reception district bill, House Bill 1068, which exempts television owners who subscribe to satellite television service from paying the excise tax imposed by the Kittitas County TV Reception Improvement District.

“This is a great example of how representative government should work. I was contacted by a number of constituents about this outdated excise tax that was put into law long before satellite television,” said Manweller, R-Ellensburg. “I drafted legislation to address the issue and was fortunate to get it through the legislative process and have the governor sign the bill into law.”

There are a handful of TV reception improvement districts around the state and the statutes pertaining to those districts have been in place for decades and have not caught up with technology. The law will exempt subscribers of satellite television service from the excise tax imposed by a television reception improvement district. It also allows employees of the TV district to assist the county treasurer in sending out tax notices to help reduce the cost of billing district customers.

The bill takes effect on July 28, 2013.
